Sewage / Bacteria Contamination Investigations

Bacterial / Sewage Contamination

Bacteria are a large domain of microorganisms of varying shapes and sizes. Present in most habitats on Earth including soil and water, the typical bacteria count in a gram of soil is near 40 million bacteria. In their controlled and intended capacity, bacteria are essential and play an important role. Bacteria are present in the human body to help digest food among other supportive functions. However, bacteria can also be harmful to humans when they become uncontrolled and dispersed, making their way to human consumptive food or water sources. Making the issue difficult to predict, bacteria are odorless, tasteless, and invisible to the human eye. Thus, the only reliable method of bacteria identification and quantification is through competent inspection methods and accredited laboratory testing.

Contamination from bacterial pathogens can make indoor environments unsafe for human occupancy and, if exposed to bacteria, may cause infectious illnesses.  Bacteria contamination often occurs when there is an uncontrolled spill of sewage from toilet overflows, sink clogs involving organic (food) wastes, and other water run-off events through unsanitary surfaces. Sewage water (black water) may contain strains of coliform bacteria that are dangerous to human health.  These strains include E. coli and other fecal-type coliforms.  E. coli is a well-known bacteria that can cause digestive problems and respiratory illnesses.  Fecal coliform is linked to severe sickness such as hepatitis A, dysentery and typhoid fever.  When an indoor environment has been exposed to a sewage/black water overflow, it is imperative to understand the extent of the areas that have potential bacteria contamination. Through inspection and testing, we can aid in developing an efficient strategy to sanitize and decontaminate the area.

Coast Environmental Group provides bacteria inspections and testing services primarily suiting two purposes:

1) to investigate areas and surfaces for potential of contamination and

2) to verify surfaces and areas clean, following sanitary clean-up of an uncontrolled spill.

Coast provides accurate and reliable bacterial testing services tailored to our clients’ needs. Our goal is to provide unparalleled customer service using a highly educated staff of individuals with fast and efficient results. Our expert inspection and testing services give our customers the peace of mind that contamination concerns are being addressed and have been cleaned, properly, to sufficient living standards.

Coast Environmental Group takes a detailed approach to bacteria testing, documenting the findings in a comprehensive report provided to our client and incorporates accurate, scientific laboratory results, provided by an independent, accredited private third-party laboratory. Our preliminary bacteria inspection reports include a scope and protocol for remediation, should bacteria be confirmed as present on the areas/surfaces sampled. Coast also provides post remediation and clearance testing after a sanitary clean-up effort is completed. Our services include a written final report and certification of completion, verified and signed by a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
